Cane Creek Traditional on sale in June
So you've decided to take up cycling? You've narrowed your preference to a mountain bike? ... street bike? ... single speed/fixed gear bikes? ... maybe just a beach cruiser? Whatever your chosen discipline, naturally you are hoping to get the best equipment for the money you have to invest.
There is a world of ways to find great deals on biking equipment. Before you get overwhelmed by the options, start local. A local bike shop will help you determine your needs, from the size of the frame and tires to safety equipment and accessories. Your local cycle shop offers the opportunity to get an idea of features you'd like, how much different bikes weigh, etc. Bike shop staff, typically a friendly lot, are most likely avid cyclists themselves, and will be able to give you excellent tips about local bike paths and cycling groups. They will also be the folks who will service your bike, wherever you purchase it, when it needs a tune-up or mechanical repair.
“But I already know exactly what I want.” Well, then, you may want to venture from the safety net of the bike shop and look for a bargain in any number of other venues. Perhaps you're interested in getting a quality used bike; the newspaper classified section is a tried-and-true way to find a deal locally. Your perfect bike may be waiting for you around the corner. Keep a current issue handy (don't forget to check the garage sale listings!) and you may be on your way to pedaling home with a great deal, and the cash you saved in your pocket.
Most newspapers now list their classified section on line, as well. Other popular on-line classifies include Craig's List and Yahoo Classified. These types of sites are excellent for searching exact criteria. You can look at bikes as near or as far as you are willing to travel, and the ads are generally kept current up to the minute.
Auction sites, like Ebay offer similar search features, as well as the exciting aspect of bidding. Ebay also takes measures to recognize honest sellers who do businesses on line, which, for many people, takes the trepidation out of the process of buying something sight-unseen.
When you're ready to sell your bike and buy a pony, or perhaps upgrade your equipment, you may use any of these options again. Check with your local shop to see if they sell bikes on consignment. Place ads in the local paper, as well as on Craig's List. If you decide to sell on Ebay, but you do not feel up to the task of shipping something as large as a bicycle, you can opt for local delivery only, or to specify that the buyer picks up the bike from you. When writing your ad, always include as much information as you know. How old it is, how much use it's seen, the size of the frame and the wheels, etc. The more thorough your ad, the better results you will have in selling. Listing a price, and whether it is negotiable will save you and potential buyers a lot of time, and posting pictures of your equipment will increase results exponentially.
